For today’s morning sketch, I thought I’d randomly open a book I’ve been meaning to read for ages and illustrate whatever I found in it. That might make me go read the book and find out how totally out of context my picture really was. I was going to try it with this Icelandic tale called ‘Njal’s Saga’, that my friend Nick showed me yesterday, with this clunky translation that made everyone sound like cave trolls and sent me into fits. But when I looked at my copy at home, the different translation read much more smoothly and wasn’t half as funny.

So this clip comes from Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’, which has been gathering dust for about six years. I’m not totally happy with how it’s come out, but I might go back and try again. I kind of like the idea of some hairy chick running around with a new set of unwieldy paws.
